Potential Products

Historically hemp has been grown as a fiber plant, today there is renewed interest in it as a sustainable source of raw materials for textiles. Fiber hemp can be made into fabrics, paper or even insulation or building materials.

There is also a lot of interest in hemp from the bio-pharmaceutical industry. Hemp contains cannabinoids that may have unique qualities distinct from being psychoactive. These Endocannabinoids and Phyto cannabinoids may have useful medicinal properties that can be expressed into medicine.

Hemp Reproductive Plant Parts

As mentioned in the section on Vegetative Plant Parts hemp in the wild is dioecious. In dioecious hemp male plants  flower between one to three weeks before female plants maximizing cross pollination. Newer cultivars thathave been developed for fiber or oilseed (biotypes that are benefited by pollination) can be monecious and self-pollinate. Other cultivars that are developed for cannabinoid extractions are often modified to produce only female plants. You can often buy feminized seed from these plants.

Vegetative Plant Parts of Hemp

Hemp, as it grows in the wild is dioicous; it has separate male and female plant parts. However, the image of hemp that most people have is that of the female plant.  Roots:

Hemp grown from seed generally has a laterally branched tap root, like most dicotyledons. A tap root as depicted in Fig 1.

There is limited literature to support this but anecdotally, hemp will develop a fibrous root system when transplanted or grown from a cutting.
